General Discussions :: Cartridge Collecting

I read the post by Kobus with interest - as perhaps many of us who collect cartridges fall into a similar category. We started accumulating cartridges as young boys and no-one thought too much of it. Collections grew larger as we grew older and the interest grew.
And we displayed them on the mantle piece, a bookshelf or wherever.
And then this became a "bad" thing - decreed so by a bunch of people imho totally ill-equipped to make decisions of this nature.
And so the new firearms act was thrust upon us - decreed by the same group of ill-equipped individuals.
Many years ago I had legalised my collection on the old SAP permit for a "Curiosity, Trophy or Ornament". No problem. A list of calibers gleaned from Cartridges of the World accompanied the permit and I'm legal for virtually any cartridge.
I submitted an application for Cartridge Collection prior to the deadline for the "new" licence applications in 2009, which I have to say confused the hell out of my local DFO. He'd never seen or heard of the form! (SAPS 520(c))But I persisted and submitted the form. As at yesterday the DFO had received no feedback - although all my licences applied for at the same time under a Collectors categorisation have been received without issue.
But here's the rub. At a recent Cape SAAACA meeting the topic was raised and the advice was to raise an application in the same manner as for firearms, i.e. define FOI's etc but pertinent to cartridges!
I collect cartridges. full stop. They're all different. That's why I collect them. All of them. In my view it's not possible to break a general collection like this into different FoI's - it just doesn't make sense.
Let's see what transpires.......

Hallo Wouter

I think getting the permit is not the issue itself, its the waiting period. I mean 3 years is just too long.

I understand in some way why a permit is needed, If everybody starts "collecting" ammo without a permit, then criminals will have easy access to obtaining ammo for there unlicenced firearms. Also some people are really stupid when it comes to live ammunition(throw in the fire, Saw it open to get the powder out etc)

Ive just heard today that the Government is planning to ban the sale/carry/use of hollowpointed ammo. I dont know if this is true, but by the way the prices have soared for these items it sounds realistic. And they are nearly impossible to get hold of.

In my introductory letter I wrote about a .44 Win Case, sorry this was incorrect. It was a .457/8 Winchester case.

Up to now what I have heard about applying for a permit makes it too difficult to apply now.

Can someone please explain how the app works

Hi Kobus

I've been chatting to Stephan in connection with getting a cartridge collectors' permit. Still havn't figured out quite what is required.

I have however heard that CFR themselves are taking in excess of three years to issue the permits -- or rather, that people have been waiting for that long without being issued with a permit.

I don't know why it's an offence to have a cartridge you don't have a gun for -- after all, all you can do is look at it. But that's the way it is.

Let us know what you find out.
Hallo Im Kobus. I have been a " Cartridge collector" from the age of 6or7. Im also fanatical about old and new firearms.

The cartridge thing started when my brother gave me a small Plastic lunchbox with ammo at the above mentioned age. I polished these every week. Later I used them for my Orals(Presentations) at school to good benifit. Strangely I was never reported to the principal or the police.

Years later I applied for my first firearm licence(2000 or 2001). The policeman walked into my room to inspect my safe and he noted my collection on a special shelf against the wall. He especially liked the .44 Winchester case and we had a long discussion on firearms, ammo etc.
Again I was never in trouble.

My collection has grown substantiably and I think its time to speak to the know how about obtaining a permit or licence for what I have.

Also it would be great to meet likeminded people.

Kind Regards
